About Relay for Life

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life began in Tacoma, Washington in the mid-1980s when Dr. Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma colorectal surgeon, decided to personally raise money for his local American Cancer Society office by doing something he enjoyed–running marathons.

In 1986, Klatt and Pat Flynn--now known as the “Mother of Relay”-–organized 19 teams that took part in the first team Relay event on the track at Stadium Bowl. They raised $33,000.

Relay for Life has grown into a national fundraiser. The key moments that all Relay for Life events share in common are: Survivors Lap, the Luminaria Ceremony and a Fight Back Ceremony.
