ASO Musicians to Visit Lassiter

The long-promised joint performance has been scheduled for Feb. 19 and will include students from Walton High School.

After a controversy involving the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra last year, chorus members from two East Cobb high schools will finally get to perform with the pros.

The Marietta Daily Journal reported this week that ASO musicians will perform with students from Lassiter High School and Walton High School on Feb. 19.

The concert begins at 7:30 in the new performing arts center at Lassiter, and will feature the work of Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and others, according to the MDJ story, which also reported that proceeds will benefit the Lassiter and Walton choral booster clubs.

The Lassiter and Walton choruses were notified by the ASO in August that only a portion of their groups would be invited to perform during the symphony's holiday concert in December.

A Cobb County School District spokesman said at the time that the two schools' choruses were told that they weren't diverse enough, and that the ASO wanted to invite other schools.

Lassiter and Walton had been part of the ASO concert series for the last four years, but declined to participate unless their full groups were accepted.

The ASO Players' Association quickly announced that it would be willing to perform with the full Lassiter and Walton contingents on campuses in fundraising events.

At the time, the musicians' union and ASO management were locked in a month-long labor dispute that was resolved in September.

The MDJ report said the Walton Camerata Singers and A Cappella groups will be performing, along with Lassiter’s Concert Chorale.
