Friends of Mabry Park Need Donations

Local volunteers met this week to discuss plans for the new Northeast Cobb public park located on the corner of Sandy Plains and Wesley Chapel roads.

Friends of Mabry Park, a non-profit volunteer organization founded in 2009, gathered at the Monday night to discuss construction updates for Mabry Park, as well as ideas for future fundraising efforts.

Lee Berg, resident and co-founder of the organization, began the meeting with the unveiling of the new Mabry Park logo, which was selected from hundreds of designs submitted by an online design services website.

“We used a web-based design site to put in a request for a new logo that would reflect how we want the park to be promoted. We received a lot of designs, but we feel the one we picked really represents our idea for the park," said Berg.

Also unveiled at Monday’s meeting was the master plan for the park, detailing the layout and positioning of park amenities such as walking trails, a playground, pavilions, informational kiosk and treetop viewing platforms.

“Mabry Park will be the first park in the state of Georgia to have “tree houses," said Berg. "Visitors will actually be able to view the park and the surrounding areas from platforms built in the forest canopy. It’s a unique idea we think the public will really enjoy.”

Another unique aspect of the park will be an internal bio-retention wetland system that will allow for run-off pollutants to be naturally filtered out of the water, then drained back into the lake already located on the property.

Berg said they're trying to make the park as self-sustainable and eco-friendly as possible.

Construction of a paved road, parking areas and perimeter fencing were also discussed.

According to Berg, the cost for the road and parking alone could run approximately $750,000, taking into account the building of proper drainage systems for the road during construction and possible parking spots along the entry road.

Cobb County purchased and owns the 26-acre tract of land where the park will be located, but all amenities, including the road and parking, must be paid for by corporate and private donations.

In order to make the park a reality, the Friends of Mabry Park are asking residents and businesses to donate generously to this worthy project.

A park preview will be held on Nov. 5 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. with shuttle buses running from Wesley Chapel UMC to the park site. There will also be a variety of children’s activities available on the church grounds.
