Bike Cobb Petitions for 'Bikeable' Shoulder

The effort is being organized as the Cobb DOT repaving project continues.

by Wendy Parker

With Johnson Ferry Road repaving work underway, Bike Cobb is mounting a petition drive to include a dedicated bike shoulder as part of the project.

The group has created a petition via Change.org that it claims has received more than 100 signatures thus far.

The request is for a three-foot-wide space along the shoulder in each direction on Johnson Ferry, which is being repaved between Roswell Road and Lower Roswell Road.

In order to create enough space for bikes, Bike Cobb is suggesting that Johnson Ferry traffic lanes be reduced from 12 feet across to 11 feet across.

"As of now, Cobb DOT says 'NO'.," according to a post Saturday on Bike Cobb's Facebook page

One of the reasons, according to information included in the petition document, is that the road would be less safe for motorists and bicyclists.

Bike Cobb argues that adding a bike shoulder would be following Cobb's Complete Streets Policy and would not cost taxpayers additional funding to implement.
