A New Look for Franklin's Seat

Reapportionment will precede the special election to replace the late Northeast Cobb lawmaker.

The window to apply to run in the Sept. 20 special election to succeed the late state Rep. Bobby Franklin won't be open very long—from , as Julia Harris explains at Northeast Cobb Patch

Franklin, the Northeast Cobb Republican who was found dead at his home late last month, engendered a firestorm of criticism for his socially conservative views and legislation. 

What he didn't attract during much of his 15-year Georgia legislative career was political opposition.

The 43rd House District he represented covers the northernmost corner of Northeast Cobb, roughly from Bells Ferry Road eastbound to the Fulton County line. The southern border rides along an area stretching from to Shallowford Falls Elementary School, taking in and Mountain View Elementary School. (See the attached PDF for details.)

The General Assembly meets starting Monday to reapportion legislative and congressional districts. But no matter how the boundaries of Franklin's old seat are redrawn, the 43rd is expected to remain in staunchly Republican hands.

And which Republican might that be? The Marietta Daily Journal's Jon Gillooly hears from Cobb GOP boss Joe Dendy that former East Cobb state Rep. Robert Lamutt is among the likely candidates who've been in touch.

Lamutt gave up his seat in 2004 to run for Congress but was defeated in the Republican primary by U.S. Rep. Tom Price. 

Cobb GOP Grassroots Event

Various Cobb-area Republican organizations are holding a Grassroots in Action Training Summit at Kennesaw State University Aug. 20 to prepare for the 2012 elections. 

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to noon in the Burruss Building, Room 151. The cost is $10 per person or $100 for a sponsorship, and online registration is encouraged.

State Rep. Alisha Morgan of South Cobb is the featured guest at the Cobb Democratic Party monthly breakfast Saturday. 

The event runs from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Piccadilly Cafeteria, 536 Cobb Parkway South.
