Sheriff: Man Speeds Through School Zone, Strikes Deputies' Vehicles

The incident occurred just after 9 a.m. Wednesday in Marietta.

Cobb County Sheriff's Office deputies on Wednesday arrested a 28-year-old man who allegedly sped through a school zone and ignored deputies' requests to stop.

Just after 9 a.m. Wednesday, a deputy saw a Toyota SUV driving in a reckless manner on Powder Springs Road, said Nancy Bodiford, the spokeswoman for the Cobb County Sheriff's Office.

The driver, Ryan A. Sample of Marietta, ignored that deputy's request to stop and increased his speed, Bodiford said. That's when a second deputy started to pursue the SUV for approximately one-half mile.

Sample slowed his vehicle, allowed the second deputy to move in front of him, stopped the SUV and backed it into the first deputy's vehicle, which was behind him, Bodiford said.

"Still attempting an escape, Sample drove his vehicle forward striking the other deputy’s vehicle that had blocked his escape," Bodiford said. "Sample fought with the deputies and resisted arrest. However, he was soon secured, handcuffed and transported to the Cobb County Jail."

He is being held there on charges of reckless driving, too fast for conditions, felony obstruction of an officer, and aggravated assault on a peace officer in lieu of $50,000 bond.

No one was injured during the pursuit, Bodiford said.

The Georgia State Patrol is assisting the Cobb County Sheriff's Office in the investigation.
