Injured Marietta Sanitation Workers Identified

They were picking up trash Friday morning in the Allgood-Scufflegrit Road area.

Marietta police identified the two sanitation workers injured Friday morning when oxygen tanks exploded in the back of a garbage truck in Marietta.

William Smith was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with severe injuries to both eyes, Officer David Baldwin said in an email. His condition is not known.Marvin Markham was treated on the scene for facial lacerations, Baldwin said.

A woman in the 1400 block of Brentwood Drive died, and her relatives threw away several oxygen tanks while cleaning her home, Officer David Baldwin with the Marietta Police Department told WSB-TV.

The tanks were in the trash that the crew picked up Friday morning, Baldwin said. When the crew crushed the garbage, the tanks exploded, which left one sanitation worker with severe injuries to his eyes and another with a deep laceration to the face, he said.
