Free 'Find My iPhone' App Aids Users, Police

The app led technologically aware Marietta police officers to a stolen iPhone 4 and a large weapons and narcotics seizure.

Northeast Cobb iPhone users may want to check out the Find My iPhone application after it led to a stolen iPhone 4 and a large narcotics and weapons seizure at 3 a.m. Tuesday.

According to Marietta police, officers responded to the Marietta Hotel on Northwest Parkway at approximately 3 a.m. for a stolen cellphone report. Officers met with the victim, who said that a black man stole his iPhone 4. The officers were able to locate the stolen iPhone by using the Find My iPhone app.

An officer said the app led them to a specific building within and indicated that the stolen iPhone was at the northeastern corner of the building, where the following items were recovered from the apartment after the execution of a search warrant:

  • 1,100 grams of suspected marijuana.
  • Five handguns, three of which are stolen from various locations.
  • One assault rifle.
  • 42 tablets of Oxycodone.
  • One digital scale.

How the App Works

Apple's Find My iPhone app helps if you misplace your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or Mac. The app will let you use another iOS device to find it and protect your data.

Simply install this free app on another iOS device, open it, and sign in with your Apple ID. Find My iPhone will help you locate your missing device on a map. You can then choose to display a message or play a sound, remotely lock your device, or erase your data on it.
