Recognizing the Power of a First Impression

New Smyrna-Vinings Patch column will take a look at fashion, healthy eating, and fitness.

Within 30 seconds, most people have formed a first impression of you. A first impression has the ability to open or close doors for us. As much as we hate to admit it, many people base a first impression on our clothes, body shape, appearance, and my favorite, even your shoes.

I guess that means most of you have formed an impression already on this column and whether or not you want to continue reading. Give me a shot and I promise to enlighten you with some valuable insights into fashion, healthy eating, and fitness.

Fashion first, my father had a saying when I was growing up, “proper planning prevents poor performance.” With a little planning and forethought on your part, you can take an ordinary outfit to the fashion forefront.

Before getting dressed, envision yourself in the clothes you plan to wear from head to toe. This includes all accessories, jewelry, and shoes. Then think of what you may have in your closet that could make the outfit look more updated or fashionable.

When reading magazines, tear out pictures of clothes, make-up and hair styles that you not only like but that you also think would flatter your face shape or body type. Soon you will begin to see a pattern in the styles you like and get a handle on the way you want to portray yourself in clothes.

Once again, envision yourself in the perfect outfit, looking your best. How would you describe this ultimate outfit... classic, modern, traditional, or chic? Realize how you want others to see you and start moving in that direction.

Fitness second, you will always feel better in the perfect outfit when you feel good about yourself. When you are working towards health and fitness goals, you realize that taking care of you is worth the effort as well as your precious time.

I must admit that I am a fitness fanatic. I am willing to try new forms of exercise, and push myself to the limit six days a week. Why? Because I want to keep my mind and body healthy for my two children, and I have learned that when I feel good about myself and my body image, my boundaries and self confidence are limitless.

I fully understand that most of you believe that working out six days a week is not an option, but try moving toward making health and fitness a priority in your daily life. There is nothing wrong with starting with small changes. Once you see the benefit from small changes, you will move forward with the bigger changes that affect your fitness level.

Remember staying healthy and fit is not easy, if it was, the majority of our population would not be overweight. But it sure is great to feel the pride and accomplishment of running an extra mile, losing three pounds, or passing up that second helping.

Finally food, all the beautiful clothes and exercise in the world will not benefit you if you make poor food choices. With this column I want to discuss ways to bring healthy foods into your own home, as well as making the right choices when at a variety of restaurants. Face it; we all probably eat out a little more than we care to admit.

Hello Vickie - I'm looking forward to your column. I would like to hear various ways people fit fitness into their schedules and where they workout and why. I'm trying to go to the gym 6 days per week too, but something always seems to come up so I'm looking for techniques to combat this.
