Article about Mother's Day.

Thy Lord has commanded, “ Worship none but Him, and show kindness to parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age with thee, never say unto them any word expressive nor reproach them, but address them with excellent speech. (17:24).

In Islam the most important thing after the worship of God is obeying one’s parents. And the parent assigned the most respect and honor In Islam is the mother.

Islam teaches its followers to pray for their parents everyday in these words “ My Lord, have mercy on them even as they nourished me when I was little child.(17:25)

The Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (peace and blessings of God be upon him), said that,  “Paradise lies under the feet of mothers”. This is a beautiful saying and a magnificent testimony of approbation for a woman, and bestows on her the highest status. It was never said for a man or a group of men that their progeny’s or nation’s paradise lies under their feet. This appellation of honor or certificate was awarded only to women.

A mother carries her child in her womb for a period of nine months and takes care of her child and puts the child’s needs before hers, this is an act of absolute love, pure and selfless on her part, which can never be repaid by the child. All mothers regardless of religion, race or nationality have this love for their children. This is way Islam teaches its followers that even if one’s mother is an idol worshiper she should still be cared for.

In another place the Prophet of Islam said, The pleasure of God is in the pleasure of parents and His displeasure is in their displeasure. Islam has laid a great emphasis on taking care of the parents in their old age. It is to teach the child that they (parents) took care of the child when it was tiny and helpless, and now when the parents are old and returned to that child like state it is obligatory upon the children to take care of the parents.

I hope that, this Mother’s Day is a joyous one for all the mothers, and everyday that comes after it will be a reminder for children to make everyday a Mother’s Day. I hope that, the mothers also understand their duty toward the children and bring up such a generation that will further the progress of this country.
