Keep Pets Safe During Fourth of July

A reminder to keep pets safe and secured during July 4 celebrations.

For most people, the 4th of July is all about food, family, fun and fireworks! To your dog, it is all about LOUD and SCARY noises. It is a dangerous and frightening time for your dog.

More dogs are lost on the 4th of July than any other day of the year.   Sad fact is every run at the shelter is already full.  You might be lucky enough to find your dog safe at the shelter, but the reality is they will have to put down other dogs to make room.

Fireworks and dogs do not mix. Do not underestimate your dog's reaction  to fireworks, even the bravest and calmest dogs can become terrified by their sound and a terrified dog will bolt and run.

Here are some tips for a safe 4th of July:

1.The most important thing you can is keep your dog away from fireworks displays. If you plan to go see fireworks, do not take your dog.

2. Keep your dogs indoors. If you have your dog with you outside for a walk, hold on tight for an unexpected "bang". Do not leave your dog outside under any circumstance even if it is in a fenced area. Every year we hear about dogs jumping fences or digging under in their desperation to run from the noise.

 3. As always, be sure your dog is wearing a collar with a tag that contains your contact info.

Also, the Cobb County Animal Control as well as all Cobb County offices are closed on Friday, July 1 for another county furlough day.  They will be open regular hours on Saturday and Sunday.
