Marty Ruffin Gardner will be discussing her book, Loving Wings. Loving Wings is an account of stewardesses encountering passenger and problems since 1940 when pilots declared, “Adding a woman to the crew is about as sensible as removing one of the wings,” to the 1970s when these adventurous women become a mainstay of passenger service. This is Marty’s first hand information about flying the friendly and not so friendly skies, as before retiring, Marty was a stewardess and her husband a flight captain for a major U.S. airline. Books will be available for purchase and signing, or bring your own copy. Reading a story first makes it much more interesting when meeting the author! Come hear about the book and learn about the life of a Flight Attendant.

In this captivating program we will discover the true story behind this savvy and accomplished writer whose incredible talent becomes all the more impressive when you consider that her two greatest novels, Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility were both written before she turned 21. In this enchanting program we will venture with prominent archeologists and historians all over England and Wales as they search for the legendary site of the Round Table. Ice Cream and a Movie
Monday, Jan. 30: Jane Austen’s Persuasion
1 p.m. Cost: $4 Cobb resident, $5 non-resident. Registration required.

From Jane Austen’s life to one of her amazing stories we will enter her world with Persuasion. Persuasion is the story of a love that survives eight years of dormancy and the frustrating obstacles of class prejudice in 19th century England. Anne (Amanda Root) is captivated when she meets the dignified naval officer Capt. Wentworth (Ciarán Hinds), but she is advised to discourage his romantic overtures because he has no fortune. They meet again eight years later, but now Capt. Wentworth has become wealthy while Anne's father is in reduced circumstances in the wake of reckless extravagance. A series of events ensue which prevent Anne and Wentworth from expressing their mutual and inevitable love. The film builds slowly, occasionally leaving you wondering if anything at all is going to happen. When it does, you realize how carefully crafted a film this is, and the final result is grandly rewarding.
