Ready for Summer ... When Does School Start?

Ok parents here we go, summer is almost here. 

I'm not sure if I'm excited to have a free summer schedule of sleeping in and not having to help with homework or if I'm stressing about having both of my kids hanging from my shirt tail all summer and having to keep them somewhat entertained and smart. 

I'm sure many have already signed up for summer camps and made vacation plans. We are in the population that has no plans other than to fly by the seat of our pants.
 
So much of our year is structured by school and activities that I plan to use summer break for what it's intended — two months of nothing but relaxing and decompressing. 

I might just celebrate the last day of school by stocking up on sunscreen, koolaid, bathing suits and popcicles. It is going to be 90 degrees this weekend after all, doesn't that just make you want to run screaming for a pina colada? Ugh, wish we could just ease into the heat.

After this super busy year, I have made a promise to myself that I will not commit to anything for the rest of the year. So, in our house, we will be staying up late playing ball in the street or riding bikes. 

When we water the lawn, we will do it in our swimsuits and use the slip-n-slide or  ride bikes through the sprinklers. We will chase lightening bugs and put them in jars at night. Bathing will be optional; there isn't anything better than the smell of sunscreen and chlorine on sleeping kids. (Well actually the kids smell the best when someone else has taken the chore of bathtime.)

I know I have just completely romanticized summer with two kids.  I also know that even though we will do a lot of the above, there will be a lot of the following. Whining, crying, bickering, yelling and fighting and ... that's just me. The kids will be talking about how bored they are, then later in the summer I will hear about how they don't want to go to the pool anymore or how its too hot to ride their bikes. 

I fully expect to hear on a number of occasions how we never do anything fun.  Those comments will usually take place a day or two after we have had some awesome adventure to Monkey Joes or some other germ-breeding ground that the boys begged to go to. 

Last summer, I thought I would be all creative and innovative. The boys and I scibbled down eight super cool adventures, and we would pick them out of a hat once a week. We also scribbled down daily things we would do. That way, over breakfast we could just draw what we would do and it would be all up to fate. Well that didn't go over very well. Either I didn't want to do something or the kids weren't up to going to the pool AGAIN. It was a good idea in theory but none of us commited to it very well.  
 
In the meantime, I will be packing pool bags and shopping for things to stock the cooler with. It's going to be a long summer, probably pretty hot too. Is it wrong to already have a countdown calendar till the first day of school ... 71 days by the way.
