Avoiding Home Repair Contract Fraud

East Cobb Library will be the venue for a Saturday workshop on avoiding home repair fraud. 

If you've had storm damage to your home or property, you may want to consider attending this special workshop on the weekend in East Cobb. The National Center for the Prevention of Home Improvement Fraud (NCPHIF), a local nonprofit, educates and coaches homeowners on how to protect themselves from becoming victims of home repair contractor fraud and scams.

On Saturday, it will hold a workshop at the East Cobb Library entitled “Protecting Yourself from Home Repair Contractor Fraud and Scams.” 

The event takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. East Cobb Library is located at 4880 Lower Roswell Road, the Parkaire Landing Shopping Center.

“Disaster/storm victims are especially vulnerable to contractor fraud,” says Phae Howard, a home repair fraud prevention expert and Executive Director of NCPHIF. “They want to hurry and get back to normal and this makes them very vulnerable.  After a disaster hits, con artists take advantage of stressed-out homeowners, making them victims, twice.”

  • How to hire them;
  • Typical scams;
  • How to vet contractors;
  • What should actually be in your contract;
  • The building permitting process;
  • How to set up payment schedules;
  • Insurance issues you may not know about;
  • How to deal with problems that may arise.
