Small Business Q&A: Curves Marietta Northeast

The new, independently owned workout club offers a pain-free option for women's fitness.

Curves Marietta Northeast co-owners Catherine Helmle and Wally Bledsoe started their exercise business by personally handing out 5,000 grand opening fliers throughout the neighborhoods near the intersection of Sandy Plains and Shallowford roads.

The women-only workout club occupies the space where an embroidery shop once operated in Sandy Plains Centre.

Bledsoe is the marketing manager, and Helmle is a coach and also the manager of their two part-time coaches.

Q. What is the best thing about Northeast Cobb?
A. The people.

Q. Why did you choose to open your business in Northeast Cobb?
A. This location has many shopping options and restaurants surrounded by subdivisions. Curves franchises have territories and this one is perfect.

Q. Why did you pick this kind of business?
A. Many reasons, the biggest is that I believe in Curves.

The program is designed as a 30-minute regimen that works the entire body. Twice around the circuit burns 500 calories.

Curves is meant as a long-term exercise option that includes cardio and builds flexibility without pain.

This program is something that you can do your entire life. I've got a member in her 80s. In fact, Medicare recognizes Curves as a maintenance program.

Q. What are some of the services you offer that people don't know about?
A. Our added value is motivation from other members as well as the coaches. It's a fun program. It's a good place to develop friendships.

Q. How long have you been in business?
A. We opened our doors on Nov. 28.

Q. How did your business get started?
A. I credit the Law of Attraction. If we're positive, we attract positive. If we're negative, we attract negative.

I made a wish list of what I want. The biggest thing is, What can I do that will give out what I put in? Being owner of a Curves club is the answer.

I want to help people feel good. I can show people that the mind listens to the body and the body listens to the mind.

Q. Do you have advice for anyone who'd like to start a small business in this area?
A. Allow time and funds for marketing.

Q. Is there anything else you'd like our readers to know?
A. I absolutely love the members and the location. I can't say it enough.
