A Thousand Reasons to Smile

When life tries to get you down, smile.

I came across a quote the other day which reads, “When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile."

How can we overcome those instances in which life throws yucky stuff at us? What can we do to make sure we have 1000 reasons to smile?

Sometimes it seems as though there isn’t much to smile about. Most people are hurting financially due to the economic situation. Personal loss, divorce, family conflicts and the lack of basic necessities are just a few of the things that can try to steal our joy.

The Bible gives guidance on what to do. In Thessalonians 5: 16-18 it advises, “Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

“Rejoice always” is a tall order. How do we do anything to the extent of “always?”  Doesn’t rejoicing mean we are giving thanks? Don’t you find that when you give thanks for something you are typically smiling? Perhaps there really is 1000 reasons to smile. Perhaps the more we spend our day in gratitude, the more we will be smiling.

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus - Philippians 4:19. This declaration from Philippians is very encouraging. It doesn’t say God will supply some of our needs, but all of our needs.

An important part of being able to receive what God is supplying us is to let go of our worries. It is impossible to trust and fear at the same time. We can either trust God will provide and then receive his gifts or we can be afraid of what may or may not happen.

I choose the smiles, the trust, the constant supply from our Father. What a pleasure it is to spend our time rejoicing. It can change your life tremendously.
