Weather Halts July 4th Celebrations

Thursday's forecast includes a 100 percent chance of rain.

A wet Fourth of July is about all that's on tap in the Cobb area Thursday.

Heavy rains caused flooding in some areas and with more rain in the forecast through Friday, a number of Independence Day events have been postponed or cancelled.

Among them is the parade and fireworks in the City of Marietta. The parade will not be rescheduled, but the fireworks will be held on a date to be announced.

Celebrations in Acworth, Kennesaw and Woodstock also have been postponed.

An estimated two inches of rain fell in the greater Marietta and Cobb area on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service, and as much, if not more, could fall by Thursday.

Cobb was under a flash flood warning through 8:45 p.m. Wednesday and a flash flood watch through 8 a.m. Thursday.

Sope Creek and Sewell Mill Creek in East Cobb reached close to flood stage in two well-traveled areas, at Lower Roswell and Roswell Road (East Cobb Park) respectively.

In Northeast Cobb, Noonday Creek near Blackwells rose to nearly six feet from its normal two feet. Flood stage is 11 feet.
