"The Watsons Go to Birmingham" is scheduled to start filming on East Mountain Street later this month.

The Watsons are going to Birmingham - but they're also coming to the city of Stone Mountain.

The Lifetime Television movie "The Watsons Go to Birmingham" is scheduled to film scenes on E. Mountain Street April 29 through May 2, said Susan Ryles, Main Street Stone Mountain executive director, at the city council work session Monday.

Stone Mountain city is no stranger to being a backdrop to film projects, such as The Vampire Diaries. In addition, the movie "The Way We Roll" is scheduled to shoot in the city in May, said David Thomas, president and artistic director at ART Station.

"The Watsons Go to Birmingham" is a book by Christopher Paul Curtis, released in 1997.

Book Storyline: When Kenny Watson’s brother, Byron, gets to be too much trouble, the Watson family heads south to Birmingham to visit Grandma, the one person who can shape him up. And they happen to be in Birmingham when Grandma’s church is bombed.
