The Pope HS Theater Department is presenting “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” a musical set in the 1920’s that tells the story of a small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, who moves to New York City hoping to marry for money rather than for love – a modern aim when women were just entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever.  Millie takes delight in the intrigue and freedom of the new “flapper” lifestyle she finds in NYC, and audiences will enjoy the jubilant jazz music and bright, spirited dances that accompany her escapades.

Set in 1922, the story revolves around the adventures of Millie Dillmount (Amanda Buck), who escapes to New York City, determined to get a job as a stenographer in order to marry her wealthy boss.  Shedding her country girl clothing for the modern look of a “flapper,” she takes a room at the Priscilla Hotel for Women, unaware it’s a front for an underground smuggling ring, run by the nefarious Mrs. Meers (Hannah Johnson).  In short time, she finds herself involved with Jimmy Smith (Evan Belyea), an apparently ne’er-do-well paperclip salesman, Miss Dorothy Brown (Olivia Buck), a genteel, aspiring actress, Trevor Graydon (Kevin Myler), her no-nonsense boss, and Muzzy van Hossmere (Jojo Fernandez), a madcap heiress with a zest for the high-life.
