Special Election Set for Franklin Seat

Here's what you need to know to start Aug. 8 in Northeast Cobb.

1. We’ll see more of the same today, according to the National Weather Service: a high in the mid-90s, a heat index topping out around 100 and a 30 percent chance of more showers popping up through the day. The overnight low will be around 73, with a 20 percent chance of further rain.

2. Northeast Cobb Patch focuses like a laser on business and the economy each Monday, and today is no exception. The British Academy of Performing Arts will answer our small-business questions, and we’ll have the latest job openings and business licenses.

3. If government meetings excite you, today’s a good day for you. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners meets at 9 a.m. at 100 Cherokee St. to finalize the agenda for Tuesday morning’s regular meeting. The county Board of Zoning Appeals has a work session at 1:30 p.m. at 1150 Powder Springs Rd. And the Board of Elections and Registration meets at 4 p.m. at 736 Whitlock Ave.

4. One issue for the elections board is the special election to fill the 43rd District legislative seat left vacant by the (R-Northeast Cobb). Gov. Nathan Deal made it official last week: The election will be Sept. 20. Candidate qualifying starts next Monday at 9 a.m. and ends at noon Wednesday, Aug. 17, Secretary of State Brian Kemp announced Friday. It costs $400 to enter the race. The election will be nonpartisan with no primary, but candidates’ party affiliations will be on the ballot.

5. The Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees, 3-2, in 10 innings Sunday night, and suspect the result, which put Boston a game ahead of the Yankees in the American League East, made Northeast Cobb resident Peter Foley smile. Foley’s grandmother Grace Coogan, who died July 28 at age 103, loved the Red Sox and hated the Yankees after spending most of her life in Boston, Foley told the Boston Globe. Coogan’s funeral is today at 1 p.m. at Embry Hills United Methodist Church near Chamblee, where she retired.
