Marietta Campmeeting is Underway
East Cobb's revival tradition dating back to 1837 continues with daily services through July 28.
The Marietta Campmeeting is taking place on its customary grounds in East Cobb.
The Marietta Campground, located across from the East Cobb United Methodist Church on Roswell Road, is once again be the venue for the outdoor revival that continues through July 28.
Services, tentholder meetings, music, a children's Bible school, socials and special guests are featured on the schedule, which includes appearances from representatives of nearby Eastside Baptist Church and Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church.
The Marietta Campmeeting began in 1837, when traveling ministers provided spiritual nourishments to rural Methodists in the South.
Families established "tents" on the camp grounds, where they worshipped, ate and enjoyed fellowship. Those traditions carry on today, with 23 cabins on the camp grounds
Last year the Marietta Campmeeting marked its 175th anniversary; the only interruption occurred during the Civil War.
The finale is a Sunday service at 11 a.m. on July 28 combining East Cobb UMC communion and the Campmeeting tradition.
