JV Sports Shine; Beach Drowning

Here's what you should know to start Sept. 14 in Northeast Cobb.

1. This could be summer’s last stand. It will be sunny with no wind and a high of about 90 and overnight low around 62, the National Weather Service says. The weather will turn cooler and wetter Thursday.

2. The meets this morning at 8:30 at the Central Office, 514 Glover St., Marietta. The agenda includes a proposal from Northeast Cobb board member David Banks for the school system to study its efficiency at using technology.

3. Today’s a day for JV girls sports on the high school scene: plays host to in softball at 5:30 p.m.; Kell and both travel to Acworth to face host and in a series of volleyball matches starting at 5:15; and volleyball teams takes the shorter ride to Pope to play the hosts at 5:15 and at 6:15. The only varsity action today involves Sprayberry’s softball team, which is playing in Warrior Classic tournament. The Lady Jackets play two games at North Cobb: against the host school at 4:30 and against Gilmer at 6.

4. The end has come for in Cobb County and in the Atlanta metro area. The last store standing for the bankrupt bookseller, at , will have its last day of business today. Everything must go, including the bookcases, displays, coffee shop equipment and ladders. Cash or plastic only; no checks. When last we checked, the store also had plenty of copies of Sarah Palin and Barack Obama books, which may say something about local political sensibilities.

5. A Northeast Cobb man died Monday afternoon while swimming with friends at Panama City Beach, FL, the city’s News-Herald newspaper reports. Five friends tried to rescue Howard Wade, 48, but the strong rip current stopped them. When three sheriff’s deputies managed to pull the group to shore, it was too late for Wade; CPR couldn’t revive him. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office released his name Tuesday.
