Juneteenth is a holiday honoring African American heritage by commemorating the 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery.
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is the name given to the date June 19, 1865, a holiday to celebrate the abolotion of slavery. The term is a portmanteau of June and nineteenth, and is recognized as a state holiday in 37 states, reports Wikipedia.
The Cobb County NAACP is hosting the 8th annual Marietta Juneteenth Celebration at historic Marietta Square. The cultural festival features smooth jazz, rhythm and blues, and spoken word performances; entertainment, ethnic foods, vendors, moonwalks, history, giveaways, voter registration and fun activities for the whole family. The celebration takes place Friday from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 pm. Historic Marietta Square and Glover Park,Β 50 Park Square. For more information, please call (770) 425-5757.
