Garage Sale to Benefit Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation

Residents of Northeast Cobb’s North Landing community and the surrounding area will host a Garage Sale to benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF) on Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10.  

The sale will take place at the North Landing Clubhouse from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. both days. The North Landing Clubhouse is located at 2165 Kemp Road. All items for this sale have been graciously donated and all the proceeds will go directly to the PBTF, which is the world’s largest non-governmental source of funding for childhood brain tumor research.  

“Each day 11 families get the devastating news that their child has one of the deadliest forms of childhood cancer,” said Morissa Burwell, one of the yard sale’s organizers. “We hope that everyone in and around our community will join us in raising both awareness and the funds needed to work towards an end to pediatric brain tumors.”  

“We attended a conference put on by the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and heard a mother tell the story of how her toddler son developed brain cancer,” said Vicky Phelps, another of North Landing’s PBTF Yard Sale’s organizers. “Their horrible journey was gut-wrenching but, thankfully, because of research dollars raised, they dramatically changed the course of the journey they expected to travel. With extraordinary measures and very harsh treatments, doctors have succeeded, at least temporarily, in extending their son’s life.”  

“The nature of the treatments he received will forever leave him more susceptible to new diseases and cancers,” Phelps added. “But if nothing else, the treatments have bought the family time together that, at the outset, they never expected they’d have.”  

The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation® (PBTF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization that seeks to:

• Find the cause of and cure for childhood brain tumors by supporting medical research.
• Increase public awareness about the severity and prevalence of childhood brain tumors.
• Aid in the early detection and treatment of childhood brain tumors.
• Support a national database on all primary brain tumors.
• Provide educational and emotional support for children and families affected by this life-threatening disease.

When the PBTF was created in 1991, the diagnosis of a brain tumor was virtually a death sentence for a child. Because there was very little research being done into the disease, most treatments were ineffective or harsh, and most children did not survive to adulthood.  

The PBTF has worked hard to change that reality. Researchers are developing new therapies that extend the lives of children, and it is believed that their work will ultimately lead to a cure for this most devastating of childhood cancers. The members of a distinguished Scientific Advisory Board evaluate the best funding opportunities in the brain tumor arena and the Board of Directors also helps guide funding decisions.  

The PBTF is dedicated to not only eradicating this disease, but to providing support to families. Educational resources deliver comfort and hope to families in need of information, and a college scholarship program gives brain tumor survivors a boost for the future.
