Dad Unhappy Jobs Go to Illegal Immigrants

A local father vents that his college-attending son can't find seasonal work.

Dear Northeast Cobb Patch,

My son John attends KSU. He has been looking for work, something part-time. He's an athletic kid, so he wanted something outdoors. He applied at a couple of landscape companies and other places only to be turned down. There's no openings right now, he was told, but they accepted his application.

My son and I have seen one company stop at an area on Bells Ferry Road to pick up dayworkers for work. These dayworkers are illegal immigrants so desperate for work that they leap into the company trucks by the dozens.

Wait a minute..... I thought there were no job openings?

As a taxpayer, father and neighbor to these businesses, I am ticked off that local businesses will turn away our youth and give jobs to illegals. I know that we're in a recession. Times are tough for us all. We're all looking to save money. But you will turn away your neighbor, a U.S. citizen, who comes to you looking for work?

The companies didn't talk salary or pay with my son, so I don't want to hear the crap about, "well, no one will do the work for what we pay. We have to hire dayworkers because no one else will do the work."

That's a lot of poppycock.

And from what I hear, dayworkers are often paid $10 an hour cash. Sounds like pretty good pay.

Has this happened to anyone else? How can we change the law to prevent this from happening?

Thanks,

John, Sr.
