Commissioners Meet; Drive for Sprayberry
Here's what you need to know to start Aug. 9 in Northeast Cobb.
1. We’ll trade a few degrees of heat for the likelihood of more daytime rain today, according to the National Weather Service. There’s a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms with a high of 91 today, then a 30 percent chance of more rain and a low in the high 60s tonight.
2. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners is meeting at 9 a.m. at 100 Cherokee St., the first regular meeting since . Not coincidentally, the meeting includes a plan to raise bus fares by 50 cents on local routes and $1 on express routes to produce a net revenue increase of $605,000, as well as a lease agreement for some vacant property the county couldn’t sell. We don’t expect this meeting to run four hours as that one did, but we’ll have live coverage at Northeast Cobb Patch however long it lasts.
3. The Cobb Board of Education is meeting Wednesday morning at 8:30. We plan to preview the work session later today, but one item we know will be on the agenda is a further discussion of the goals for Superintendent Michael Hinojosa, the focus of a special meeting the board held Saturday morning. The Marietta Daily Journal says that meeting produced three goals for this year: raise student achievement while plugging gaps; create current and three-year fiscal plans; and address the needs of students who aren’t going to college. Hinojosa says the first goal is the most important, the MDJ reports. That’s interesting in part because the latter two goals are areas Chairwoman Alison Bartlett has focused on throughout the spring.

4. You can help out today simply by taking a new car for a spin. Ford is holding a event from noon to 5 today. Take a test drive, and Ford will give the school $20, up to a total of $6,000.
5. If this story doesn’t ruffle your feathers, nothing will: Six members of an honor guard from had cash, credit cards, an iPad and a wedding ring stolen from their van while they participated in an Air Force veteran’s funeral near Athens, WSB-TV reports. It doesn’t get much lower than that.
