Calling all teen poets! The Cobb Library Foundation is holding a poetry contest, and two lucky winners could win cash and an opportunity to meet U.S. Poet Laureate, Natasha Trethewey.

There will be two categories for entry:

  • students in (rising) grades 3 – 6
  • students in (rising) grades 7 – 12

One winner from each category will be chosen. Winning poems will be published in the Marietta Daily Journal and posted on the Cobb Library website. Each first place winner will receive $100 and an engraved plaque. Runners up will receive $25.

Poems can be written in any form, with any subject matter. They must be typed or neatly printed. Poems will be judged by a panel of Marietta and Cobb County educators and will be rated on the following criteria:

  1. Originality, flavor, and word choice.
  2. Imaginative and/or informative.
  3. Focus (coherence, movement, flow)
  4. Engaging and/or entertaining content.
  5. Usage (spelling, punctuation, grammar).
