CERT, GOP to Meet; More Fireworks

Here's what you need to know to start the day July 5.

1. The same weather that wreaked havoc with fireworks Monday will hang around the rest of the week, the National Weather Service says. There's a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms today and a 40 percent chance tonight. The high will be about 90, and the overnight low will be around 69. We're also under a Code Orange air-quality alert.

2. Nature’s fireworks overshadowed the Fourth of July celebrations in much of the area Monday night, and even if the show of your choice went on as scheduled, such as Marietta Square, you had to get wet to watch. Fortunately, you have another chance to see fireworks in nearby Woodstock, which postponed Monday night’s show until 9:15 tonight at the shopping center on Highway 92. Assuming, of course, we don’t get a storm rerun. Woodstock-Towne Lake Patch will deliver any weather-related updates.

3. District 3’s Community Emergency Response Team is meeting tonight at 7 at the Mountain View Community Center. District 3 covers all of Northeast Cobb and part of East Cobb. For more information, contact the District 3 CERT leader, Tom Storck, at testorck@bellsouth.net. Also this evening, the Cobb Young Republicans are scheduled to hold their monthly meeting at on Marietta Square at 7. Email CobbCountyYR@gmail.com for more information.

5. The Cobb County government and facilities such as libraries are open today after being closed Friday for a furlough day and Monday for the Fourth of July, but the is closed today for one of its furlough days. That doesn’t mean you can take the day off if you’re in school, however; summer school is in session.
