Blackwell Elementary Early Release Days

Gather around the water cooler to discuss what's happening in Northeast Cobb today, May 24.

1. In their 15th year together, the Emerson Drummers is offering classes to the public. The group has grown with hundreds of beginner drummers.  It is not strictly a beginner class, but beginners are welcome.  The first hour of class includes the teaching of at least one rhythm piece, and the second hour has more rehearsal of performance pieces, in which everyone is invited to participate and learn on the fly.  The group has a strong sense of community, and with many experienced drummers taking part, you can really be lifted by the power of the rhythm. Emerson Unitarian Congregation, 7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. every Tuesday night, $15 per class or $45 per month if paid at first class.  2799 Holly Springs Road, just north of Post Oak Tritt.  Loaner drums and sale drums available by request at class.  Call the church at 770-578-1533 for directions.

2.The Mabry Park master plan will be presented to the Cobb County commissioners at a 1:30 p.m. work session with a vote to follow at the regular commission meeting at 7 p.m.

A nonprofit group of private residents, Friends of Mabry Park, raised money to pay for the master plan, and will raise money to develop the land once commissioners approve the plan.

  • Control fire ants by lightly scattering a bait over your lawn. Forty-eight hours later, use an insecticide on any large mounds you can see. Repeat in September.
  • Plants need an inch of water per week. What’s an inch of water? If rainfall or irrigation fills an empty soup can to a depth of one inch, that’s just what plants need.
  • The best time to water is between 10 p.m. and 10 a.m. This allows the grass to dry before nightfall the next day and prevents disease.

4. Blackwell Elementary School has early release days today and Wednesday.  Students will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m.
