AYP for Sprayberry; Beef Recalled

Here's what you need to know going back to school Aug. 15 in Northeast Cobb.

1. You couldn’t ask for a nicer day than today. It will be sunny with a comfortable high of 85 degrees and a breeze blowing 5 to 10 mph and gusting to 20 mph, the National Weather Service says. The overnight low will be about 64 with a continuing breeze.

2. It’s almost as if Mother Nature knows today is the first day of school and is trying to make it feel more like fall. (For the record, the high Aug. 1, the original first day of school in Cobb County, was 91.) Keep your eyes out for school buses, children at bus stops, children walking and long lines of cars at all the schools around Northeast Cobb. Parents, remember that bus riders may bring water bottles and drink on board to stay hydrated.

3. students can return today safe in the knowledge that their school made Adequate Yearly Progress in 2010-11 after all. The school, which was two students away from meeting the federal standard of an 85 percent graduation rate and thus achieving AYP when the results were announced in July, appealed the graduation rate to the Georgia Department of Education and won, the school says on its website. That means all Northeast Cobb schools made AYP.

4. As part of the excitement surrounding the start of school, Paper Mill Village is playing host to from 5 to 8 p.m. at the shopping center at Johnson Ferry and Paper Mill roads in East Cobb. Food trucks will be there, a lot closer than their normal hangouts in Midtown and Buckhead, and the shops will stay open late.

5. Ground beef produced by National Beef Packing in Kansas and sold at and in Georgia has been recalled, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced late last week. The recall covers 60,424 pounds of beef possibly contaminated with E. coli bacteria; all of the products should have the establishment number “Est. 262” within the USDA inspection mark. The USDA considers the contamination a high health risk. Publix has extensive details about the products recalled, saying the products had sell-by dates of July 25 to Aug. 12. The information on Kroger’s website is more streamlined.
