A Perfect Day for a Slurpee

Here's what you need to know to start the day July 11.

1. It will be mostly sunny and hot today with a high of about 94, the National Weather Service says. There’s a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon and evening, and the overnight low will be about 73.

2. officially takes the reins as superintendent today when he is sworn in at the school district’s Central Office at 8 a.m. Northeast Cobb Patch will have coverage later today.

3. in Northeast Cobb is holding its free each night through Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 for children from age 4 through fifth-graders. The theme is Club VBS: Beach Blast.

4. On the government front, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners will have an agenda work session at 9 a.m. at 100 Cherokee St. The Board of Zoning Appeals has a work session at 1:30 p.m. at 1150 Powder Springs Rd. And the Board of Elections and Registration meets at 4 p.m. at 736 Whitlock Ave.

5. Looking for some fun in the sun not too far from Northeast Cobb? Try Cobb Sheriff Neil Warren’s annual Corn Boilin’ from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at in Marietta; tickets are $20. Of course, if “free” is more important to you, 7-Eleven is offering free small Slurpees today; all you have to do is drive 285 miles or so to get to a 7-Eleven, if the company’s website is accurate with its store locator. How far would you drive for a Slurpee? How about an Icee? A Slush Puppie?
