Interested in DAR? Free Genealogy Workshop

The Old Noonday Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is offering a free genealogy workshop in East Cobb on Saturday, February 15th from 2 to 5.  This workshop is specific to completing an application for membership and will be of interest to those considering membership, as well as, current DAR members interested in supplementals.  Much of the information will apply to NSSAR (Sons of the American Revolution) membership as well.  The guest lecturer and genealogist will be Betty Christy of the Fielding Lewis Chapter.  Old Noonday Daughters will be on hand to help with any questions.

Today's DAR is a growing and diverse group encompassing all colors, religions, and politics.  Old Noonday's members range in age from 19 to 82 including mothers with young children, business professionals, and retired members from many walks of life.  For interested women who trace their ancestry back to the American Revolution, this workshop will provide basic information to help you get a running start on your application for NSDAR.  Please contact info@oldnoondaydar.org.

NSDAR website quote “The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, a worldwide service organization with nearly 3,000 chapters, is devoted to promoting historic preservation, education and patriotism. With more than 177,000 members, it has been one of the nation's most active service organizations since its founding in 1890. In just a few examples: Daughters provide financial support for scholarships, fund schools for underserved children, and volunteer time to local programs such as literacy tutoring. Members contribute thousands of hours of volunteer time in the nation’s VA hospitals each year as well as provide support and encouragement to active military personnel through various programs.  In communities across the country, local chapters distribute thousands of U.S. Flags each year, and welcome thousands of new citizens.”

Lynn Forney Young, NSDAR President General, “Oftentimes when I tell people about our growing and thriving membership they ask me what I attribute this success to. There are so many things that influence women to join our Society and while these reasons are unique for each woman, overwhelmingly there are a few things that are common amongst a majority of members.

In local communities chapters are making strides in their grassroots efforts which in turn attract local women who see this group making a difference and they want to be a part of it. Many women see membership in DAR as a way to honor their family history and preserve their family genealogy for future generations. Others see DAR as an organization of women who share their common interests and hobbies and a great place to make new friends.”
