DESCRIPTION:St. Andrew United Methodist Church of Marietta will continue
to celebrate 50 years of doing the Lord&rsquo\;s work this spring\, with
special Homecoming festivities on April 29\, 2012\, and an old-fashione
d revival during the first week of May.\n&ldquo\;On Sunday\, April 29\,
2012\, St. Andrew will welcome former St. Andrew Pastor Dr. Gerald Thurm
an to deliver our message on the 50th anniversary of the church&rsquo\;s
original worship services\,&rdquo\; said Rev. Mack Riley\, senior pasto
r at St. Andrew United Methodist Church. &ldquo\;After serving as pastor
here at St. Andrew in the 1980s\, Rev. Thurman went on to serve other c
hurches and retired as District Superintendent of Gainesville District.&
rdquo\;\n&ldquo\;St. Andrew will host only one service that morning\, be
ginning at 10 a.m.\,&rdquo\; said Rev. Angie Crummie\, associate pastor.
&ldquo\;We will then keep the celebration going with a special 50th ann
iversary dinner beginning at 11:30 a.m.&rdquo\;\nThe cost of the Homecom
ing Dinner will be $6 for adults and $3 for children. The church welcome
s everyone who wants to join congregation members for the dinner\, but r
eservations must be made by calling the church office at (770) 926-3488
by noon on Friday\, April 27. The reservation deadline is necessary to e
nsure that St. Andrew&rsquo\;s food preparation team has time enough to
make adequate preparations to feed everyone.\n&ldquo\;Beginning on Sunda
y\, May 6\, St. Andrew will continue its 50th anniversary celebration wi
th an old-fashion revival featuring evangelist Rev. Tom Atkins. Rev. Atk
ins will deliver the message at all three services on Sunday (8:30 a.m.\
, 9:30 a.m.\, and 10:45 a.m.)\, as well as at evening services Sunday th
rough Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. each night.\n&ldquo\;We&rsquo\;re confident
that everyone who hears Rev. Atkins messages at the revival will get a
great deal out of it\,&rdquo\; Rev. Riley said.\nChurch founders chose t
he name St. Andrew because the apostle Andrew is considered a &ldquo\;do
-er\,&rdquo\; doing the work of the Lord. The first sanctuary\, complete
d in 1964\, is now our Community Room. The Education Building opened in
1973\, the present sanctuary was built in 1986\, and our Keheley Center
opened in 1999.\nToday\, our church family has grown to include more tha
n 350 families dedicated to doing the work of the Lord. Church members a
ccomplish this through various ministries in which we hope all members o
f our congregation will become involved. These ministries include Thanks
giving and Christmas food drives\, wellness ministries\, the Appalachia
Service Project\, the Andrew Christian School in Haiti\, and ministries
 for men\, women\, children\, youth\, and seniors.\n&ldquo\;We believe th
at every single person who we have the pleasure of welcoming into our ch
urch has a talent that is theirs through the grace of God\,&rdquo\; Rile
y said. &ldquo\;We strive to help people discover and cultivate that tal
ent in ways that glorify Him.&rdquo\;\n&ldquo\;We welcome everyone who w
ishes to become part of our church family and help us accomplish our mis
sion\,&rdquo\; Crummie said. &ldquo\;Whether a person wishes to serve on
a church committee\, volunteer to help beautify the sanctuary\, work wi
th the children or youth\, or sing in the choir\, we value each individu
al and look forward to embracing more members of our community into our
church family.&rdquo\;\nSt. Andrew UMC&rsquo\;s congregation includes re
sidents of Marietta\, Kennesaw\, and other communities in northern Cobb
County\, as well as residents of Woodstock\, Towne Lake\, and other comm
unities in southern Cherokee County.\nSt. Andrew UMC&rsquo\;s Mission st
atement is: &ldquo\;St. Andrew United Methodist Church strives to be a f
amily of caring\, nurturing followers of Jesus Christ welcoming all thos
 e seeking to know and grow in God's service.&rdquo\;
