Rugby: The New Olympic Sport in 2016

By Randall Joseph, Coach of the Trojans Rugby Football Club

Rugby will be re-introduced to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016.

Rugby is an exciting, free-flowing game designed for players of all shapes, sizes and athletic abilities.  It involves skills such as running, passing, catching, kicking, decision-making and supporting teammates.  It also involves contact elements such as tackling, rucking, mauling, scrummaging and lineout play that are unique to the game.

High school and youth development programs introduce these skills to boys and girls progressively as their exposure and experience levels increase.  The path starts with an introductory version and steadily adds new elements until players are fully prepared for the adult game.  At all stages the emphasis of the players, the coaches and the officials is on safety and fun.

High School rugby was started in the Atlanta area in 2005 with 3 teams, and has grown to now about 10 teams in and around the state. The Lassiter Trojans Rugby Club has evolved into one of the top teams in this sport, winning five state titles since 2005.

Currently we run a fall training to learn the new Olympic sport.

This is an ongoing program, so if you're 14 or older we invite you to one of these sessions. This is a contact sport so please be aware that once we get into full training we will have contact.
