Food, fun, music, shopping and more return to the Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church this weekend.
The 23rd annual Marietta Greek Festival is returning to Northeast Cobb this weekend, as the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church will again be the venue for three days of celebration. The event kicks off with free admission from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. For the rest of the weekend (Saturday 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) admission is $4. Children under 12 are admitted free. In addition to the usual samplings of traditional Greek fare, vendors, music and dancing, visitors can take tours of the church's Byzantine sanctuary. Students, staff and parents will beautify the school's entrance again this weekend.
Keheley Elementary School is beautifying the school’s main entrance this month by adorning its front columns with a colorful mosaic. A year ago, Jordan Rager was just coming off his stint as a contestant on NBC’s show “The Voice” and getting ready to graduate from Loganville High School. This year, he's getting ready to go on tour. According to his mother, Connie Rager, this tour is just what the young musician needs to kickstart his career. "Since graduating LHS last May, he's full speed ahead with his music career and this upcoming tour is just what he needs to continue to build his fan base with tons of college age folks," Rager said, adding he's continued to work hard. An exhibit featuring the artwork of Cobb County students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities will go on Thursday in Marietta. The 'Inspired by the heART' art show will kick off with a dessert reception at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Cobb County Central Library, 266 Roswell St. During the opening reception, there will be a student slideshow presentation. The exhibit will run until May 11.

National film company Leva Film Works will shoot scenes in Marietta and Kennesaw on Memorial Day weekend for a documentary that will be included in the 75th anniversary edition DVD of Gone With the Wind. The documentary will feature the Root House Museum and Garden, Zion Church Museum, Brumby Hall, Marietta National Cemetery, Marietta Square and Glover Park, and Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. The documentary will also include interviews with Marietta's Gone With the Wind Museum director Connie Sutherland, who will serve as location consultant for shoot. Novelist Claire Cook, author of "Must Love Dogs" and the forthcoming "Time Flies," will be the featured guest at the Cobb Library Foundation's "Booked for Lunch" event on May 22 at the Atlanta Country Club. The luncheon, a special event before the book's public release, begins at 11:30 a.m. and the program ends at 1 p.m. The cost is $30 a person and tickets may be ordered online. Move over, American Idol. Cobb's seniors will take the stage next Tuesday afternoon in the hopes of being crowned the next Cobb Senior Idol. The competition, which is in its ninth year, allows contestants to showcase their talents in comedy, dance and song in front of panel of judges. Those judges will select the top five contestants. The audience will decide the winner. Rehearsal begins Monday, May 6, and the competition gets underway at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, at the Jennie T. More than 70 vendors will showcase their best dishes, including Italian, seafood, steak, BBQ and desserts, which range in cost from 50 cents to $5, at the 20th annual Taste of Marietta Sunday, April 28 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. on the Marietta Square. At last year's event, more than 100,000 people hit the streets to sample their favorite foods. Live bands will perform free concerts all day at five stages on the Square. Winner Stacie Stamper: "Everybody has a way to give."
The winner of the Patch Easter PEEPs contest is a diorama that shows a little marshmallow figure in a hard hat helping to build a home while other PEEPs cheer him (or her?) on. The entry by Stacie Stamper honors Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, which helps support the nonprofit’s mission to provide decent housing for low-income people around the world. "That's so exciting. How fun is that?" Stamper said when she learned that her entry had won. Second place goes to Martin Burrow of Winder, who used jelly beans and a glass jar to create a colorful PEEPs floral arrangement.
