Northeast Cobb High Five

We Knew Melanie Could Dance

Here's what you need to know to start Aug. 12 in Northeast Cobb.

1. Expect a mostly sunny day with a high of about 93 and a 20 percent chance of showers, the National Weather Service says. The overnight low will be around 69. We’re also under a Code Orange smog alert.

2. Congratulations to 2010 Lassiter grad Melanie Moore, named America’s favorite dancer Thursday night as the winner of the eighth season of Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance? Northeast Cobb Patch contributor Robbie Huck will have a report for us this morning from the packed viewing party held in Lassiter’s gym.

3. The East Cobb Senior Center is celebrating its 16th birthday this morning at 11. Northeast Cobb Patch (the center is actually in Northeast Cobb) will be covering the event.

4. St. Andrew United Methodist Church has a great way to beat the heat and make a final splash before returning to school next week: Splash Back to School. It runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today with a giant wave slide and is free.

5. Northeast Cobb Patch is excited about the restart of school. We’ll have photos today from Mabry Middle School’s Charge Day orientation session and a list of back-to-school deals. Don’t forget that kindergartners through second-graders, along with their parents and siblings, can take test rides on their Cobb County school buses this morning at their normal school pickup times. And you still have a chance to become a bus driver yourself.
