VIDEO: Late Interception Dooms Sprayberry
Despite valiant work by the Jackets defense and a late 3rd quarter touchdown, a late pick six ruined opening night.
There were six minutes left in the fourth quarter. Sprayberry High School fans were looking forward to a 7-3 victory, built on a strong defense and costly penalties from Wheeler High School.
It wasn't to be.
Wheeler's Allen Artis read the route of the Jackets' receiver and picked off a screen pass in the slot. Artis ran it in for a touchdown to grasp victory from the jaws of defeat.
Torrey Richardson scored Sprayberry's touchdown with 1:15 left in the third quarter, giving the Jackets a 7-3 lead.
The defensive play of the night was a fumble recovered by senior Atuan Johnson at the Sprayberry goal line with 1:46 left in the 2nd quarter.
