Operation Stop Arm Law Passed

The efforts of two Northeast Cobb moms changed the law to save children.

April 14, the Georgia legislature passed the stop arm legislation allowing stop arm cameras to be placed on school buses. The bill will move to the Governor’s desk for signature.

Bill SB57 will also allow the purchasers of the cameras being it the school districts or private companies to share in the revenue of the tickets to fund the equipment and bus safety programs.

Northeast Cobb Patch ran a story on February 13 about local moms Sheri Lewis and her neighbor Mandi Call who started Operation Stop Arm (OSA), a small group of parents determined “to bring together the people and departments that have the power to change this behavior and help reduce the number of stop arm violations in our state,” according to Lewis.

It is due to OSA's efforts that the law was passed.

OSA wants to reduce the incidents and save children’s lives by educating motorists on the law, educating the children and parents on how to be safe at the bus stop, getting stop arm cameras on buses to deter or catch violators, and providing law enforcement with data that will help them to enforce the law.
