Lassiter to Host 7 on 7 Football Tournament

The Trojans will play host to county rivals and out of state powerhouses.

Lassiter High School is hosting a football tournament this weekend that displays a fast-paced, exciting brand of the game which focuses on the spread offense favored by many coaching staffs.

Games began today at 9 a.m., according to the Marietta Daily Journal. Elimination games will start at 9 a.m. tomorrow, with the championship game scheduled to take place at 4:30 p.m.

The winner of the tournament will earn a berth in the national championships, which will be held next week in Hoover, AL. Lassiter is already guaranteed a spot, owing to their position as hosts of the Georgia Invitational. If Lassiter wins the tournament, the runner-up will also make the trip to Hoover.

7 on 7 football games last 21 minutes, with an emphasis on passing and reading offensive routes. Points are scored by either scoring a touchdown or making a defensive stop. There are no linesman, and the quarterback has four seconds from the time of the snap to release the ball. Many coaches feel these tournaments are a great way to get players ready for their upcoming seasons.

"We’re more concerned with winning games in the fall than in 7-on-7 tournaments in the summer, but it is a good way to prepare for the season,” Kell High School football coach Derek Cook told the MDJ. Cook's Longhorns won a similar tournament at McEachern High School in June.
