The Kell Longhorns took part in the Georgia 7-on-7 Invitational, a 16-team football tournament comprised of teams from four states, this weekend at Lassiter High School.

After a 3-2 record on Friday's seeding day landed Kell with the No. 7 seed, the Longhorns worked Saturday to move deep into the double-elimination tournament.

"We want to win no matter what it is; whether it’s a shoe tying contest or a spitting contest or whatever," said Kell head coach Derek Cook.

But Cook admitted that it's not all about wins and losses in a 7-on-7 summer tournament like the Georgia Invitational.

"We like to see who’s going to make the mental mistakes and who’s not going to make them," said Cook. "It gives out quarterback an opportunity, without a pass rush of course, to read defenses on the run and on the move within a small amount of time. It also allows our defense to read and react to pass receivers, so there are a lot of great things you can get out of it (a 7-on-7 tournament)."

The Longhorns won their first game Saturday and then faced Lassiter, who beat them Friday. Kell blew a 9-0 lead to fall into the losers' bracket, won one game there before being bumped from the tournament by Lovejoy High School.

At the end of the day, Cook left the field Saturday happy with the effort his team put out. But he's anxious to get his entire team in one place and put the pads on.
