Fatal Accident on I-575 in Northeast Cobb

The accident involved one vehicle in the Noonday area of Northeast Cobb County

 

Update (6:25 p.m.): According to a public information release provided by the Cobb County Police Department, the driver of a blue 2002 Ford Escape that was traveling southbound in the left lane on I-575 left the roadway and crossed into the grassy median. Still heading southbound, the vehicle eventually became airborne at the Hawkins Store Road overpass and landed on the retaining wall for the bridge, where it burst into flames.

The driver will be identified by the Cobb County Medical Examiner's Office at the conclusion of the investigation.

Original Story: One person was killed in a fiery accident on Interstate 575 at Hawkins Store Road on Friday morning, according to the Cobb County Police Department.

According to information reported by the Marietta Daily Journal, a Ford Expedition was traveling southbound on I-575 at 3:45 a.m. Friday when the car left the roadway, struck part of the Hawkins Store Road bridge, and burst into flames under the bridge. The driver, the lone occupant of the vehicle, was killed in the accident.

At this time, authorities are not releasing the name or gender of the driver.
