China Dynasty's Liquor License Suspended

Hit hard by the bad economy, the restaurant might save some money by dropping alcohol sales altogether.

China Dynasty is losing its liquor license for two weeks for selling a beer to a 19-year-old and might give up alcohol sales altogether.

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday upheld the License Review Board’s punishment against the owner of the Northeast Cobb restaurant, Chuan Wei Liu, and his wife.

As explained in a licensing hearing Dec. 1 and detailed in the consent agenda for the commissioners, the restaurant at 3605 Sandy Plains Rd. was the subject of a compliance check Nov. 10.

County police Officer Alicia Chilton and a 19-year-old volunteer went to China Dynasty to eat that day. Chilton ordered water with lemon; the 19-year-old asked for a Chinese beer.

The server, who is Liu’s wife, checked the 19-year-old woman’s Georgia driver’s license, then brought her the beer anyway.

In addition to serving an underage customer, the server had under an expired alcohol work permit.

Liu said he has operated China Dynasty for 20 years without a violation and has been involved in the community by supporting Lassiter High and other schools. He also said his wife misread the driver’s license because she wasn’t wearing her reading glasses.

He said the expired work permit resulted from a misunderstanding about state law.

The License Review Board voted for the 14-day suspension of the liquor sales license anyway.

That action might not make much difference to China Dynasty, which Liu said likely won’t try to renew its liquor license this year.

Liu said the bad economy hit the restaurant hard, and he laid off all servers except family members.

He also said most of his customers are families, and only 5 percent of sales come from alcohol.

2 week suspension was a slap on the wrist. If I were the owner of the restaurant, I would have taken my license, wrote GO TO HELL on it and taped it to the mayor's door.

Disclaimer: I hold two liquor licenses.
