A smartphone app provided by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety will give New Year's Eve partygoers a way to find a ride home with just the swipe of a finger.

The Drive Sober, Georgia app also will provide users with information about drinking and driving. The app can be downloaded for Android and iPhone, and a simulation is available here

According to a news release from the Cobb County Police Department, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism last year reported two to three times more people died in alcohol-related vehicle crashes over the winter holidays compared to periods during the rest of the year. Traffic fatalities involving an alcohol-impaired driver averaged 28 percent in December but rose to 40 percent over the holiday period.

A standard drink is 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits. There is no moderate drinking guideline for youth.
