St. Andrew UMC Welcomes Rev. Terry Phillips as New Associate Pastor

  • Name: Rev. Terry Phillips
  • Occasion: St. Andrew UMC Welcomes Rev. Terry Phillips as New Associate Pastor

Members of St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Marietta welcomed Rev Terry Phillips as the church’s new associate pastor on Sunday, August 5, 2012.

“St. Andrew United Methodist Church is proud to welcome Rev. Terry Phillips to our church family,” said Rev. Mack Riley, senior pastor. “Terry brings a wealth of experience to our church family, having served as a pastor at many different churches for more than 48 years.”

Rev. Phillips has pastored more than a dozen churches across North Georgia during his time in the ministry, from the west bank of the Savannah River to just east of the Alabama border to a few miles south of the Tennessee state line. Closer to home, he served a pastor of Powers Ferry United Methodist Church from 1988-1991, and as pastor of Bethany United Methodist Church in Smyrna from 2006-2012

“I am very much looking forward to becoming a part of the St. Andrew family,” Rev. Phillips said. “I’ve known Rev. Mack Riley for many years and, when I retired, I wasn’t quite ready to hang it up. Fortunately, Mack told me that St. Andrew needed a part-time pastor to help him out and invited me to become part of the staff there.”

Rev. Phillips earned his bachelor’s degree in general social science and psychology at Lagrange College in 1965. He then went on to earn his Master of Divinity degree at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology in 1967. Rev. Phillips has also been involved with various civic organizations, including the Optimist Club in Smyrna. His hobbies are watching sporting events, walking, reading and traveling.

Rev. Phillips and his wife Mary have two sons and four grandchildren. Mrs. Phillips works as a registered nurse at Northside Cherokee Hospital.

“I’ve known several ministers who have served as pastors at St. Andrew through the years, and I always heard that it was a wonderful church,” Rev. Phillips said. “So I’m very much looking forward to meeting all the people there and serving St. Andrew’s great congregation.”

St. Andrew United Methodist Church is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012. Founded in April 1962 by a small group of dedicated Methodists who originally met at Blackwell School, St. Andrew United Methodist Church takes pride in being a family of caring, nurturing followers of Jesus Christ who welcome all those seeking to know and grow in God’s service.

Church founders chose the name St. Andrew because the apostle Andrew is considered a “do-er,” doing the work of the Lord. The first sanctuary, completed in 1964, is now our Community Room. Today, our church family has grown to include more than 350 families dedicated to doing the work of the Lord. Church members accomplish this through various ministries in which we hope all members of our congregation will become involved.
